Young Scientist Award / Poster Award

The 26th Annual Meeting of the Protein Science Society of Japan at Nagoya will call for papers for the Young Scientist Award and the Poster Award.

The meeting will give 5-10 presentations the Young Scientist Award and 15 – 20 presentations the Poster Award from the five fields of “Structural biology”, “Computation/Information science”, “Protein/Cellular functions, Imaging”, “Biophysics, Protein Folding” and “Proteomics/Protein engineering”.

Furthermore, a few recipients from the Young Scientist Award will be given the Young Scientist Excellence Award. The recipients will be offered a gift and a monetary prize of the travel grant (with upper limit) for participation in the US Protein Society meeting.

Please apply for the awards via the online abstract submission system. Your enthusiastic applications are highly welcomed. The recipients of the Young Scientist Award will be requested to contribute a review, experimental protocol or essay to the PSSJ Archives.

Young Scientist Award
Application submission period

January 29 (Thu) – February 16 (Mon), 2026

Eligibility Requirement

– Regular members who are postdoctoral researchers or assistant professors
– Motivated Student members
– Regular members such as research students (*1)
– Under 40-year-old as of April 1, 2026
– Past recipients of the Young Scientist Award are not eligible.
Younger scientists are more likely to be prioritized. However, the committee will properly consider the length of maternity and childcare leave. If you meet such conditions, please send your CV mentioning them to the secretariat.

Regarding the annual membership fee, please complete the payment for FY2026 (from April of 2026). It’s unnecessary to pay the fee for FY 2025 (until March of 2026).

*1 To apply as a regular members such as research students, the following conditions must be met:

  1. The applicant must be a non-PhD holder who is affiliated as a research student (or equivalent) under the supervision of an academic researcher.
  2. A Supervisor’s Verification Form (confirming the supervisory relationship and the reason for applying for this award) must be submitted.

After submitting your paper via Young Scientist Award application on the abstract submission page, send your application form to the secretariat (pssj2026@aeplan.co.jp).
※The application form can be downloaded on the abstract submission page. Prepare your application form in English using figures and characters to appeal your research.

Selection Methood

< The screening of application documents >
The Young Scientist Award will be selected based on application documents in advance. The evaluation item is “Research topic” at this stage.
As the result of the screening, if your paper is not selected for the Young Scientist Award symposium, it will shift as below:

Regular member applicants

Their papers will shift to the poster presentations. (Not eligible for the Poster Award.)

Student member applicants

Their papers will shift to candidates of the Poster Award.
※When submitting your abstract, please make sure to also complete the required Poster Award fields: “Research Summary” and “Poster Award History.”

<Onsite selection>
Those who are selected Young Scientist Award based on the screening of application documents will be invited to make a presentation in English at the Young Scientist Award Symposium. A few recipients will be selected for Young Scientist Excellence Award based on the research topic and the clarity of the presentation. If your presentation is by co-authors’ research accomplishments, please clarify at the presentation what points you contribute to the research.
A brief discussion time is to be arranged after each presentation. Please deal with the discussion in English.

<Award Ceremony>
An award ceremony will be held at the venue on the third day of the meeting. In addition, an award ceremony will also take place during the banquet on the second day (Young Scientist Award only).

Poster Award
Application submission period

January 29 (Thu) – February 24 (Tue), 2026

Eligibility Requirement

-Presenters are required to be student members and Regular members such as research students (*1). (General regular members cannot apply for this award.)

Selection Methood

The Poster Award evaluation will consist of two stages: a preliminary document review (first stage)  and on-site assessments of poster presentations and Flash Talks (second stage).

Please note that starting from the PSSJ2026 in Tottori, Flash Talks will also be included in the Poster Award evaluation.

First stage: Preliminary Document Screening

Applicants will be evaluated based on the submitted documents. When registering your abstract, please upload the following two items in addition to the standard abstract.

  1. Research Summary
    Please prepare a research summary addressing the points below and submit it at the time of abstract registration. The summary must be written by the applicant.
    Language and word count: Up to 400 words in English.
    Content: Clearly describe (1) the scientific significance and notable points of your research, and (2) the specific contributions made by the applicant.
  2. Confirmation of Previous Poster Award History
    If you have previously received a Poster Award, please describe how the current research differs from the research presented when you received the award.
    Language and word count: Up to 200 words in English

The results of the first-stage review will not be disclosed to applicants. This is to encourage active participation in both the poster presentation and flash talk, regardless of the review outcome.

Second stage: On-site Poster presentation and Flash Talk

Submissions that pass the first-stage review will be evaluated based on their on-site poster presentation and flash talk.

Evaluation Criteria “Research topic” and “Clarity of the presentation”
Selection Results: The award recipients will be announced and recognized at the award ceremony held at the venue on the third day of the meeting.

Regarding Poster Award Flash Talks
Flash Talks were not included in the Poster Award evaluation at the PSSJ2025 in Himeji, but starting from the 2026 Annual Meeting in Tottori, they will be eligible for Poster Award assessment.

Presentation: One-minute brief presentation with 1 page slide

Submission of Flash Talk Files: When notifying you of the presentation date, we will also provideinstructions on how to submit the file. After creating your file, please ensure to submit it according to theprovided instructions.
